What is polycystic ovary syndrome?

PCOS is a common health problem, has varied presentation with short and long term problems.The term “polycystic ovaries” refers to the many tiny cysts, or bumps, in the ovaries. These cysts indicate hormonal imbalance and do not need to be removed surgically.

What are the problems women with PCOS can have?

Women with PCOS have a healthy uterus, but many have difficulty in getting pregnant due to inadequate development of eggs from the ovary. PCOS are more at risk to develop Type 2 diabetes before the age of 40 and are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer. Anxiety and depression are not uncommon and the obese PCOS have difficulty in maintaining weight.
